Greater Good

I've had the pleasure of knowing Raymond Gutierrez for quite some time now. With both parents and siblings who are in the entertainment industry, his own rise to fame does not fall short of any expectations. Raymond let me tag along one Sunday and watch him live as he hosted "Party Pilipinas" & "Showbiz Central", both regular gigs for him and must-watch shows of the GMA network. On this day I get a double treat because Raymond is working with Joanne Quintas for his grooming. (I recruited Joanne into the Shu Uemura team not so long ago and is one of my dearest friends). From time to time I think it would be interesting to feature other makeup artists doing their thing as we can always learn something new from somebody. I was once asked "what is the biggest myth about makeup?" and I said that people think only women can wear makeup. It is not that only women "can" it's more like that it is the "accepted" idea. "Grooming" would be a more fitting term, if you were to make reference to makeup application on men, and more and more guys out there are willing and able.

I was expecting to see Raymond with a bunch of different outfits for both shows. I was surprised to find out that he only had one for each that afternoon. In case you didn't know, he's towering at 6 feet 2 inches, in fact, he projects much much taller and in the photo on the left I think he looks his best when works with clean lines and not very many layers. Joanne, don't quit your day job! A celebrity in her own right & not a stranger to the limelight, former Miss Philippines switches to behind the scenes as Raymond's (tall & beautiful) hired help for the day. Giving him a final touch up and ta-da!! we're on another set in another studio for the latest showbiz news and headliners. Dressed in Viktor Jeans, personal stylist Ton La'O streamlines the look by going tone on tone and playing with texture to intensify the black. The result is subdued and not over styled. GET RAYMOND'S LOOK:

1. Kiehl's Facial Fuel De-Puffer for the eyes to reduce puffiness and under the eye dark circles.
2. Shu Uemura Liquid Foundation 754 & 734 (light and dark for contouring), Joe Blasco & Cinema Secret concealer to hide any imperfections and even out skin tone.
3. Set with MAC Studio Fix Powder Foundation NC35, 40 & 42 to get a multi-dimensional face that's not too matte and never shiny.
   
4. Open up the eyes with Shu Uemura eyelash curler, intensify the gaze with Dior Show Mascara and brush brows into place with an eyebrow brush.
5. Finish with Blistex Lip Tone Lip balm for the most natural looking not made up male lip!

I KNOW RIGHT?!?

You probably didn't expect to see a dude on this beauty blog. Well, aside from the fact that this boy has the makings of some serious eye candy, he's also emerging from a not-so-secret society of slashers. Before you freak out, what I mean is the model-slash-pre-school teacher-slash-budding photographer-slash cutie type. Whew! I have had the "pleasure" of working with Apollo and not only is he good vibes all around, the dude is just plain adorable and this is me pimping him out on the world wide web, not that he needs to be, mind you. Oh did I mention that he's got a younger brother?....

We just wrapped another shoot for Trilogy Boutique last night but here's a sneak peek of our previous fashion ed for Oxygen featured in Status Magazine:

Why Don't You...

1. Trade in the usual black smokey eye shadow for an unexpected shade such as a nice bronze/gold. Who says smokey eyes should always be in shades of black?
   

2. Get a portrait of yourself taken in black and white with out-of-bed hair, a bit of gloss, and some eye liner, every time you turn a year older. There's something sexy about the raw and undone quality of capturing a woman who is barely made up.

3. Vamp up your typical french tips for something a little bit more edgy but still feminine.

4. Take cue from Maggie Q ( I love her!!!!) and darken your locks from beach babe to smoldering nymph. Ever heard the term "your hair is your crowning glory"? This is the best example of that, notice how her makeup stays the same!

5. Skip the gloss and keep everything shimmery except the lips as we approach cooler months. Matte lips work best with bright colors, but make sure your lips are supple and soft to begin with.

6. Keep it simple and go down the "less-is-more" route. Leighton's pulled back hair shows off her neck, shoulders and an awesome tan that makes her look slimmer. Dewy skin that screams I'm so hot hot hot hot hot.

7. Do a Gwyn and reach for that straightening iron. I understand the affinity for surfer-girl waves but if every single girl is already riding that swell then it's time to make a change. You'll not only stand out but your hairdresser will love you too.

8. Update your makeup routine in less than 5 minutes. When you hear the name Gwen Stefani, what comes to mind is: red lips, winged eye liner and perfect platinum hair. How refreshing is it to see her in the same everything but with a pale lip. Wow. Can this lady do any wrong? Ugh.

9. Make like a modern Jackie O. It's fun to play grown up especially if you get it right. Camilla Belle does not disappoint. Volumized hair+porcelain skin+strong brows = straight out of a 60's film!

10. Shock everyone with dark lips if you've been sticking to the same shade like um forever. This works best going from day to night. Instantly brightens up the complexion too!
